The study can be found in the journal BioRxiv. Besides stress, it adds that a dog's cognitive abilities can be also be affected. For the study, 92 dogs from training facilities in Portugal were put into two groups. One group was trained aggressively and had choke collars used on them. The other went through training in a docile manner with rewards coming in the form of treats. The three-year study saw the dogs go through multiple stress tests. In one, negatively-trained dogs approached bowls of food slower than the other, a sign of pessimism. "Dogs trained using aversive-based methods experienced poorer welfare as compared to companion dogs trained using reward-based methods ..." - Researchers, via study. His procedure took place at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, and occurred with “no complications.”. According to the Carter Center, the pressure was caused by bleeding in his brain, which was likely a result of the two falls he took in October. . Because of Carter’s age, the falls resulted in a subdural hematoma, which is commonly associated with severe head injuries. . A subdural hematoma can cause symptoms that range from headaches and memory loss to seizures and paralysis. . Despite this, Carter has still remained active in recent weeks, attending Sunday school and making public appearances. Carter is currently in the hospital recovering from his surgery and will remain there for “as long as advisable for observation.”
